FEATURE ARTICLE
Orla-Ruby, the new music sensation has gained
the hearts of teenage girls, with her edgy image and catchy songs. Orla walked
down the red carpet of her album release with most confidence and showed off
her figure by wearing a tight black leather dress, strutting in her
louboutin’s. This new star has recently
released a new album called ‘Let me tell you’; with her new single ‘Don’t lie’ hitting
number one on the charts, after just 24 hours. Everyone is amazed that this
girl is only 18 years old, and has the confidence, attitude and style of a new
upcoming star-not forgetting her song-writing skills and how her lyrics tell it
all. I can hear the teenage girls screaming to find out more and it was the
constant questions, which showed that we must chat with this new music
sensation.
How are you feeling about the release of your new album?
I’m actually really, really excited about it because
to be able to let people hear what I have achieved and what I have accomplished
is such an amazing feeling and really excites me. I am a bit nervous because I know that some
people won’t like my music and because I am new in this industry I don’t know
how people will react to it. A lot of the
songs in this album mean a lot to me, and are all to do with personal experiences.
It kinda reminds me of a dairy-It’s like giving someone your diary with all
your secrets in that you have never shown to anyone before but I think in some
ways this will show my personality more-umm but yeah overall I’m really excited
to share my music.
Do you have a favourite song from your album?
Yes I do actually, I mean I do love them all
and am really pleased with how they have all individually tuned out but my favourite
and the one that really stands out to me is a song called ‘Torn’. It’s a song
that I had already been working on for ages so to me it’s the song that means
the most and the song where the lyrics in my eyes are quite cleverly written. So
it’s harder to work out the meaning but I think that this is better because it
means that everyone else can interpret the song themselve and maybe link it to
things that they have been through.
Who has been your inspiration?
There are many people who have inspired me in
different ways. I mean from people who I have seen on the street to famous and
iconic figures. I’m that person who
writes everything down so if I see something when I’m out that gives me a song
idea or something I will just quickly write it down so that I don’t
forget. I mean a singer that inspired me
is Tina Lewis. She’s a very current and cool singer and her songs are so
interesting to listen to. Her albums are
quite different. I mean her first album was very pop and upbeat, kind off happy
whereas her new album is more rocky and her lyrics are more powerful. I didn’t
know which one I preferred so I kind of put the two together, making a pop-rock
genre, which is what my new album ‘Let me tell you’ is. So she kind of made me
realise that as an artist you don’t just have to stick to one specific genre
you can mix it up a bit, which is what you will see in my album.
We have had lots of questions asking about your fashion,
what current trends do you wear?
I probably wear denim jackets the most
because I just think that they are really easy to just chuck on, and they go
with everything. I would say that I have
quite an edgy look so I like wearing leather, quite chucky jewellery and I
would say that black is one of my main colours that I wear. I wouldn’t say that I’m a “girly girl”, in
what I wear more of someone who would wear jeans and a leather jacket rather
than a dress but that wouldn’t be to say that I would never ever wear a dress. I
mean recently I went to the release of my album event and I wore heels and a
black leather dress so I do wear dresses but I wear ones more in my style so
like the leather.
How has your music influenced your style?
Well the genre of my music is pop-rock, like
my new album so it’s very upbeat and strong so like I said before I have a very edgy fashion
lwith some elements of rock. I think
that my music is quite loud so I want to create a statement with what I am
wearing so I wear quite a lot of black, because it’s very dark and bold. I make
sure that my style links in with the songs because I think it is so important.
I mean you can’t wear a beautiful, elegant dress when performing rock songs-it
just wouldn’t work or give the same effect. To me fashion is a key part in the
music industry because I think it shows your personality more and the style of
music that you produce.
There are rumours about you starting your own fashion
line, is this true?
I knew what would come up (laughing). Well
because I have only recently become part of this industry, my publicist wanted
me to start something so that I can become better known, so yeah there have
been discussions on starting my own fashion line. Since I am so interested in
current trends and fashion and design I am extremely drawn to this idea and
would be something I would love to do .I don’t know if this will happen right
away, because there has only been talk of this and I am currently so busy with
the new album and working on new material but I am hoping that this will happen
in the future.
It was so nice that we finally got to speak
to this new star, who was so sweet and lovely to chat to. This young girl certainly
knows it all with her distinctive look and thoughtful answers.
Orla’s new album ‘Let me tell you’ will be
released on November 17th.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Quality of photos
When
I started to make my magazine cover I enlarged the photo so that it would cover
the whole A4 page. When I did this the photo was very blurry and did not
produce a clear and sharp image. This is because I took the photos on my iPhone
which is good for taking small images but not for taking large photos. This
means that I will have to take the images again because the quality of this
photo is not good enough for a magazine cover.
Instead
of my iPhone I am going to use an SLR camera as this will produce high quality
photos which is what I want and need to produce. I
am still going to use all the same poses because when evaluating them I thought that
they appealed to my audience and genre of magazine well.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Magazine cover photos
When taking my main photo's I decided that the glow stick idea was not going to work because I would have to have a dark black background and I didn't think that this would meet the conventions of a music, but especially a fashion magazine cover.
I had other ideas about how I wanted my model to stand, so I experimented with different positions and overall I was really pleased with the body language and facial expression of my model.
I decided that out of all the photos I took for my main cover that I liked this one the most. I placed my masthead on the photo to see what it would look like and really liked it. I think that the effect used creates a glowing image which links to the name of my magazine.
